Jane Isogawa – Maria’s best friend – age 18 to 26 Performer

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

JANE (CHARACTER): is from Timaru, New Zealand.

She lived there in an apartment with her Aunt Shirley who was her only living relative. Her aunt was very sick during the first audition and Jane called her nightly from the US. Jane returned to New Zealand briefly between the first audition and the callback to care for her aunt and to go on a few auditions. Her aunt’s condition seemed to even out a bit during this time. Jane was glad to see this. She returned to the US a few days before the final call back. Two days before the final call back. Jane got word that her aunt died. The news devastated her. Jane is now alone in the world and conflicted about auditioning and missing her aunt’s funeral. She doesn’t have anything to go back to in New Zealand if she doesn’t get into the school. She also has nothing here in the US. The only friend/acquaintance she’s been able to make so far is Maria. Jane will be selected for the school. Soon after, she realizes that she hasn’t managed her money well because she doesn’t have enough to both go home and go to school. Forced to choose between the two, she decides to stay in NY. She manages to find a small apartment in a low-rent, high-crime area in the Bronx and handles her aunt’s affairs by phone. All the while she longs to return home and have closure with her aunt. Her aunt’s estate attorney informs her that her aunt’s savings cancels out her debts with just a little to spare. He’ll send her a check for $100 soon. Jane gets a retail job in a used bookstore to help make a living until school begins. She hopes to eventually save enough to get back to New Zealand and say a final goodbye with her aunt at her grave. Jane never got Maria’s last name so she has no way of contacting her until school starts.
Jane’s aunt Shirley was one of her biggest supporters. Jane feels lost without her at the callback. Things don’t mean a lot. She tries to hold it together, but eventually breaks down at the callback and tells Maria how she’s feeling. Maria is supportive of her. Jane manages to go in and audition for the acting program (with an emphasis on musical theatre). Although, she almost falls apart right before singing, she manages to pull it together and perform. The Judges hesitate briefly after she finishes auditioning which makes her very anxious; they then accept her into the program.
