Maria Blackwell – an Australian/ New Zealander, our bright, romantic and unaffected heroine – age 18 to 26, singer, performer, environmentalist

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

MARIA

Maria – just wants to be inspired. Caged bird, wants to be set free. Suffered from depression, panic attacks, low self-esteem. But thats sort of under control now …. sort of. There is the most amazing vibrancy to her, but she can’t seem to just let it out. It comes out when she sings. It’s not that she’s shy and quiet; she’s not. But she doesn’t shine as much as she could, because she’s not a very happy person and all of her issues are affecting who she is as a person.

She always puts on a brave face and exists behind a perpetual façade that everything is ok; so there are very few people she feels she can be herself in front of. Jane is one of them and that friendship is crucial in allowing the audience a window into the real Maria. She was hospitalized when she started getting self-destructive because her father demanded it and he has a way of getting what he wants. I don’t know if she tried to kill herself, or if it was just generally self destructive behaviour and depression. Suicide is obviously a serious issue and we’d have to really think about whether that’s the right thing for our protagonist.

In spite of all this, she is an incredibly tough person. She’s the strongest girl in any room, she just doesn’t know it yet. She hasn’t felt strong for a long time, but back her into a corner and watch what happens. She’s a force of nature, and the events of the season bring out her strength, her independence, and she just blossoms.
