CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

MASSA (CHARACTER): grew up in Mito, Japan.

Massa has lived in Tokyo for the last several years, where he was very successful as a dancer in a traditional dance troupe there. The success he found made him feel confident that he could soar much higher as a solo artist than the ensemble work he did would allow him. He has no doubt that he will get into the PA Academy and be a great success. He has much to learn though, and will see that a career in dance isn’t always as easy as he thought it would be both skill and training-wise. Skill is only part of the equation. The way you treat people in rehearsal and in booking jobs is very important. He comes off as a bit cocky to some people. It takes a special personality to connect with him at first and help his compassionate/human side come out.
Massa comes from an upper middle-class family. He has one younger brother who has no interest in the arts. His parents taught both their children that patient discipline while learning a skill will lead to mastering it. They also taught their children that the mastering of skills is the most important thing in life. Massa used this approach while studying dance as well as during his school studies. He quickly rose to the top of his dance class when he began formal training in traditional dance. This ultimately led him to get the spot in the dance troupe. To outsiders, it appears that he is a success at anything he attempts. This is true regarding outer skills like dance, but not true regarding personal relationships.
He is good at sparking acquaintanceships, but has very few deeper relationships because he is fearful of exposing his true feelings and getting hurt, which he feels would make him look weak. That is his worst fear. Deep down he longs for someone he can share an intimate relationship with, but he doesn’t currently have the interpersonal skills to do so or the fortitude to try because he’s too focused on dance and his exterior image to explore that right now.
His success in dance has boosted his self-confidence regarding physical activities out of proportion and made him lose touch with whom he is as a person. This confidence of his physical self will be tested during the pilot when he confronts Tom during the major altercation in A.3 where he realizes that he isn’t indestructible after Tom injures him either by physical violence or shooting him.
