CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

WILLIAM MILLER (CHARACTER): in his mid 40s.

He is a founding member of the academy and has been its dean since the school’s inception fifteen years ago. The Academy is his empire, built on hard work and generosity of spirit. William’s success lies in the fact that he has a businessman’s mind and an inherent artist’s touch.
During the conception of the academy, it looked like the school would fail before it even began do to lack of funding. William went into the community and secured a large amount of funding from private investors including Leon Blackwell, a local, businessman who was successful in oyster harvesting. Leon Blackwell, was under investigation at that time for tax evasion. He donated two-million dollars to the academy in an effort to appear more civic minded and get the IRS off his back by nulling out what he allegedly owed them through the tax deducible donation he made to the academy. William was grateful for the money, which enabled the academy to open. Since then, Leon and other investors have given additional donations to the school. They are thanked at an annual diner.
William is one to play by the books when it comes to admittance into the academy. He believes that talent is the most important quality for an auditioner to have, not who their connections are. William heard about Tom and Frank’s reputation before the audition, but didn’t see it as a concern until the fight with Johnny occurred during the callback. At that point he had to take action. He treats the situation without favoritism, putting the interest of the academy first, without letting Leon influence or bully him.
William’s one chance at life-long love and happiness was crushed soon after he graduated from college. His sweetheart, a professional modern dancer, was on a flight to marry him, when her plan crashed upon touching down at the airport. Several people on the flight, including her were killed as a result of the crash, the rest survived with only minor injuries. This devastated William. He wandered around lost in life for a long time. Starting and running the academy has given him newfound hope along with a family he always wanted to have with his sweetheart. He currently lives alone in a Manhattan condo.
He shares a strong friendship with Helen Ford. During the first 13 episodes, their friendship will develop into something deeper and committed as the two turn to each other in times of personal and professional crisis. This will be established in the first episode. Afterward, there will be one scene between them in each episode that speaks to this point.
